Waterford United reeled off their sixth league win on the trot when they defeated Mervue United on Saturday afternoon last. The final scoreline did not do justice to the Blues and that fact was acknowledged by manager Stephen Henderson after the game.

“We needed those points today because very shortly we have some really big games coming up. We lost our shape somewhat at times and I was not happy with that. We did not get the ball out wide when we should have and as a result we allowed them come back into the game when really we should have been out of sight.

“Having said that however, we looked much better in the second half and when we scored there was only going to be one result. I was delighted for Joe [Mulcahy] because he has tried so hard in games and in training during the past few weeks. Willie John Kiely can do no wrong right now and his goal was brilliant, simply brilliant. We have had a lot of games in recent weeks but all of the lads have come through with flying colours.

“I have a fantastic group of lads in that dressing room and I am proud of them all. They take on board what we say to them and that was proved at half-time today. We lost our way and to be honest we did not play as well as we could have but we have the points and that is the sign of a good team.

“When we play to form we are right up there with the best of them and I believe we will be up there all season given the rub of the green. We now head to Carlow for another cup game. We will go all out to win that match also and keep the winning run going. We will turn our thoughts to Kildare County come 5pm on Monday,” concluded Henderson.
