This was a good as it gets! The game was played at a frantic pace throughout the 90 minutes despite the fact that the surface was wet and sandy and a bitter wind blew into the city end of Galway city.
The previous week, Waterford United had to grind out a victory in Salthill Devon, and they had to do something similar on their return to the west on Saturday night last. The result means that the Blues have now won their opening five games of the league campaign and lead second-placed Shelbourne by four points.
For the second week in a row the Waterford manager Stephen Henderson made four changes to his starting XI. Kevin Burns started his fist game of the season in goal due to the fact that Chris Konopka had not recovered from his knee injury. Gareth Cambridge replaced the suspended Liam Kearney. Paul McCarthy came back into the middle of the park instead of James O’Sullivan and Willie John Kiely played up front with Vinny Sullivan, with David Grincell returning to the subs bench.
Timmy Purcell played on the left side of the pitch, the position usually occupied by Liam Kearney and Gareth Cambridge was wide right.
