The new traffic routes put in place on the northern approach to Waterford City from Kilkenny were described last week as a ‘total maze’ that was sending drivers completely astray at night
South Kilkenny Co. Councillors called for proper signage to be erected on the new temporary roads and roundabouts in the Grannagh-Newrath areas.
The Piltown Electoral Area Committee of Kilkenny Co. Council was told by Cllr. Cora Long (FF) that seven people stopped and knocked on her front door at night seeking directions in the last two weeks. One was a Priest and another was a woman with children in her car.
The Priest asked: ”Please tell me where I am. I’m trying to find Waterford”.
A girl who called to her house after dark was looking for Mooncoin and another woman was seeking directions to Portlaw, she added.
The new arrangements were ‘a total maze’ at night for people who were not familiar with the area, she added. Something should be done about the situation quickly.
Committee Chairman Cllr. Dick Dowling (FG) said he could not agree more with Cllr. Long. Drivers coming towards Waterford from Kilkenny were going up by Milltown Cross and some ended up at Smartscastle School. It was necessary for drivers to be very vigilant and careful and proper signage was needed urgently.
Cllr. Pat Dunphy (FG) said early warning signs should be erected before roundabouts and junctions to alert drivers.
Newrath Area Engineer Denis Lawlor said he would raise this matter with the ‘powers that be’ and report back to the Committee.
