Hearty congratulations to Niamh Briggs who played a pivotal role for Ireland in their 23-0 win over Scotland in the Women’s Six Nations Championship on Friday last.
The Clonmel clubwoman scored 13 of Ireland’s total – converting her own try, to which she also added two penalties in a win which secures the team’s place in next year’s World Cup.
The Dungarvan-born full-back was later joined in the action by club mate Kate O’Loughlin.
“They all played well and had to because it was hard work against a side who never stopped trying,” said Irish coach Steven Hennessy.
“We have achieved what we wanted now this season but they can go all the way next week with a win against Wales.”
Meanwhile, Waterford City made it two wins from two last Sunday when defeating Fermoy in their (Third Division) O’Sullivan Cup first round clash at Kilbarry.
Emerging as 32-15 winners, City have found some form at the business end of the season, form they’ll hope to carry into their league trip to Galbally next Sunday (2.30pm).
It is still mathematically possible for City to join Carrick in the top two, but a maximum points return on Sunday and another win away to Douglas the following week must be achieved by the Kilbarry men.
It’s by no means out of the question, but City will need to reverse home defeats at the hands of both pending opponents to make this late season turnaround a reality.
At Tybroughney, Carrick-on-Suir also faced Dungarvan in the O’Sullivan Cup and maintained their 100 per cent home record thanks to a 43-13 victory.
The two clubs will resume hostilities in Ballyrandle on March 29th as Carrick ready themselves for the final promotion push via the play-offs while the hosts will bring the curtain down on a forgettable season.
Meanwhile, Waterford’s Brendan Cullinane lined out for Rockwell College in their narrow Munster Schools Cup defeat at the hands of Christian Brothers College Cork at Musgrave Park on Sunday.
A brother of Waterford City’s John, Brendan is a member of Munster’s Under 20 Development Squad and was as disappointed as any ‘Rock’ player, as their team conceded 21 points in the final quarter.
