A couple of Premier League teams almost crashed out to lower league opposition during the course of the weekend but they eventually came through. Bohemians, who are former winners of the FAI Cup went to the brink against Piltown before eventually going through on penalties. They were held to a scoreless draw and during the penalty shoot-out Piltown had two chances to win the game but the Bohs goalkeeper Geoff Kelly saved both spot kicks. Bohs went through 6-5 to set up a date with Southend in the next stage.
Liam Meagher scored what proved to be the winning penalty. Hibernians took the lead through David Kennedy against Mooncoin but they trailed 2-1 with time almost up. Paul Gahan equalised for Hibs however and Gahan then went on to complete his hat-trick in extra time. Hibernians won 4-2 and they will now play the champions Carrick United in Round 2. Carrick defeated Kilmacow 3-0 thanks to goals from Anthony O’Donnell, Wayne Fitzgerald and Ian Cleary. St Saviour’s were too strong for the in-form Division 1A outfit De La Salle as they also won 3-0.
Stephen Dalton (13 mins), Joe Twomey (48 mins) and Dalton once again (71 mins) were the goalsacorers for St Saviour’s. Bolton defeated Park Rangers 4-0. Lee O’Brien, Shane Delahunty, Neil Hodgers and Paul O’Donnell found the net for Bolton. It could have been worse for Rangers because Brendan Halligan and Wayne O’Halloran both missed penalties for Bolton. Johnville’s game with Red Star was postponed because the Red Star club had a goalpost broken by vandals prior to the match.
