Thurles CBS 1-19; De La Salle College 1-12

De La Salle College had to settle for second best on Wednesday last when they played Thurles CBS in the opening round of this years Dr Harty Cup competition at Cahir.
The outcome of the game was never in doubt after Kevin Slattery hit the De La Salle net for the games opening goal after Paddy Cooke in the De La Salle goal fumbled a free just as the opening quarter was about to draw to a close.
A large crowd was present for the game between the two sides that won the competition between 2007 and 2009, all expecting a good fast game of flowing hurling to be fought out.
But they were to be left disappointed as the game was very much a stop start one caused in the main by a whistle happy referee.
De La Salle played first with the aid of the wind and always knew that they would have to register a good first half tally if they were to prevail but it failed to materialise.
Some poor finishing from what chances they had, a weaker forward line to which they were able to field in recent years and a very good Thurles CBS defence and an economical forward line meant that De La Salle were always playing second fiddle.
Trailing 1-8 to 0-4 at the break, De La Salle came out all guns blazing after the break and hit the first three scores of the second half all from Darragh Flynn and it looked as if a game would be made of it.
