Waterford Crystal striker Paul Quilty (pictured) netted a first-half hat-trick – including two penalties – to knock Tramore out of the Munster Junior Cup on Sunday.
The home side had a goal ruled out by referee Anthony Walsh after 14 minutes when Quilty fired past goalkeeper AJ Murray; however the striker, who was in stunning form for the victors, was harshly judged to have fouled Tramore defender Michael Grant.
But it was Quilty that was involved in another incident less than two minutes later when he went down in the area under a challenge from Grant and there was no doubting that the referee got it right when pointing to the spot, which Quilty converted with great confidence.
However, Crystal’s lead lasted less than sixty seconds as from the restart Francis Rockett played a long ball into the area and when Leo Jacques failed to clear his lines Tramore’s David Grincell nipped in to beat Derek Hearne from close range.
Crystal regained the lead from another penalty kick award to them on 24 minutes when midfielder Liam Coady was upended in the area by Michael Caulfield and although keeper AJ Murray guessed right, he couldn’t keep out Quilty’s spot kick.
It has to be said that the home side deserved their lead as they were on top in the key midfield area and they added a third goal with just three minutes remaining in the first half when Joe Watson whipped in a left-wing cross that saw Paul Quilty fire a brilliant right-footed shot from 16 yards to the top corner.
