Peg Power’s production of JB Keane’s Big Maggie at Carrick’s Brewery Lane Theatre is a triumph of direction, full of depth and nuance, in an excellent Tom Nealon designed set.

There was an initial fear that this shows Maggie Polpin would not live up to the standards set on the professional stage but Maria Clancy was outstanding as the tough love mother who rules her pampered children with a will of iron as she imposes a difficult life-changing regime on them, after the death of her wastrel and unfaithful husband. Clancy is as tough and as obdurate as is needed yet she shows a rare and confounding sense of humanity and almost sympathy.
