Waterford Music started 2011 with their 549th concert with ace accordionist Dermot Dunne and virtuoso violinist Katherine Hunka. They make great music together and having heard them last in 2009 in Christ Church Cathedral, I knew I was in for a great night of musical versatility and entertainment. They talk to the audience and they set the scene with practised ease. Hunka is a brilliant violinist and Dunne manages to transpose other instruments into interesting accordion passages.

The highlight of the opening section was Vivaldi’s winter from The Four Seasons with the accordion creating rain and wind as the violin created familiar and frantic sounds of slipping on ice, which brought back sharp memories of the pre-Christmas freeze.
Dunne delighted on an Argentinean Acollaradas by Hernandez . A Bartok Rhapsody failed to enthuse me.
