Waterford born actress Maebh Cheasty is excellent as Cassandra and Atheiva in a very stark retelling of one of the oldest play texts in existence since 458BC. Off Plan by Raw at the Project Arts Centre is an imaginative, visual and sound retelling of The Oresteia by Aeschylus and once you get used to the mix of Classical Greek Theatre and going to the supermarket for tea with a Dunnes Stores plastic bag you get the gist of war, incest, violent bloody murder as father kills daughter as a sacrifice to the Gods, banishes a son and exiles another daughter to the garden where she eats ice pops and plots bloody revenge.

Another history lesson where one kills mother and gets away with it at the first trial by jury, but the contemporary references to progress, development, concrete, builders, boom and then bust are clever though at times you feel like giggling at the crazy overlaps of culture and the pace is slow, pointed and moralistic. Movement is often stylised then laid back modern and it uses multi-media effects of video, strange sampled music and lots of blood. Simon Doyle wrote the work out of a workshop process and Rachel West directed it as if sleepwalking. Maebh Cheasty sang and acted with great style but her majestic Athena was spoilt by two balanced red plastic platters.

Waterford’s Dave Duggan (now in Derry) is bringing his new play Still, The Blackbird Sings there in March as part of a short tour that does not include Waterford. What a pity.
