Villa and Clonmel Town met in Ozier Park in the SFAI Under 14 Cup on Saturday morning and not for the first time they served up a cracking contest. This was the 4th season running that the clubs have met and although the players have changed somewhat the standard of play was equally as good as in years gone by.

Extra-time and penalties are usually required to separate the clubs but on this occasion the Villa made no mistake whatsoever in normal time.

Conor Coad opened the scoring after 11 minutes and although Clonmel did have chances justice was done on 52 minutes when Jonathan McEvoy scored a peach of a goal to wrap up the game for the Waterford boys. His goal graced the headquarters of football in Waterford.

Many schoolboy football lover made a quick exit to Mitchell Kennedy Park following the full-time whistle to watch the SFAI Under 16 game between Hibernians and St Francis from Dublin but were left disappointed when there was a “no show” from the Dublin hot-shots.

However, following a number of frantic telephone calls to ‘The Saints’ it became clear that they were not due in Waterford as they have yet to play Edenderry in the previous round. The Hibernians management duo of Niall Starmer and Ray Anderson must now wait and see just who they will play, but it was a pity that this misunderstanding had to happen.

However, at least the Hibernians players still have a smashing game to look forward to later in the month, be it Edenderry or St Francis.
