As athlete David McCarthy continues to make a name for himself on the US collegiate circuit under the guidance of Providence head coach Ray Treacy (running a PB for the 1500m in Villanova University the other week), another young man from the same neck of the woods in west Waterford, Seamus Power, is going along nicely on the golf course.
Both are on accountancy scholarships – Ballinamult-born David in Rhode Island, Touraneena native Seamus in East Tennessee State University. A recent profile in his college newspaper told how the latter “left rainy Waterford” in 2006.
“The weather is a lot better here for golf and even though coming to the United States wasn’t a long-thought decision,” he said.
“He is our top player and everybody in the team looks up to Seamus,” says ETSU coach Fred Warren. “I definitely think he has a future in the game. He is the epitome of a student-athlete, one of the best players we ever had.”
Power’s objective is to graduate and then return to Europe and turn pro. Let’s hope it stays fine for him, literally.
