Tesco is to create 110 extra jobs in Waterford city in a new store that will open in Ballybeg within the next twelve months, according to an announcement from the company this week.
The new store in Ballybeg will be part of a nationwide €113m investment that will see the opening of seven new outlets and the overall creation of 748 jobs.
The company already employs more than 13,000 people in Ireland and the majority of the new jobs will be outside Dublin.
The President of the Irish Farmers association, John Bryan, said he welcomed the creation of employment but it was not a good thing that one company had such a dominant position in the Irish market. Suggesting that it would be farmers and primary producers who would be paying for the new stores, Mr Bryan insisted that his members could not afford to take lower prices from Tesco.
How many people from Ballybeg will get these jobs?
does Fiachra propose that the shop only employ people from Ballybeg? Can people who are not from Ballybeg shop there or is it only for the locals?
maybe they should employ the people with the best qualifications/experience who do a good interview! whether they be from Ballybeg, Ballyduff or Bombay!
Tescos first Superstore in Darndale/Coolock area of Malahide Rd in Northh Dublin have employed many locals as a certain quota was agreed before the store opened.
It is my understanding that the local Partnership and FAS were involved in training local people (mainly female) for employment after consultation with Tesco .
Hopefully the same will happen in Waterford, when local activists and community leaders work together.
Eamonn O Dúlainn
Eamonn O Dúlainn, don’t kid yourself, I live just by the Ardkeen Tesco and there is nothing but foreign nationals working there, hardly any Irish, look these stores are for the community and hence they depend on the community to shop there and support the stores , the same should apply vice-vesa, but it doesn’t, Superquinn only seem to employ local people, and Pablo this one is directed at you, it helps when you are in the store that the people work there can speak english, so evidently qualifications andexperience and all that non-sense you speak of is clearly not Tescos interest, I mean did you actually think it was. You know it’s nice for locals to go into a store and be met by locals , and chat about local issues etc.. Pablo you sould like a politician or worse still a Fianna Fail back bencher, people are not being anti establishment by raising these points but it sounds to me as though you are!
Tony, are you saying these non-nationals are not part of our community? If they weren’t working somewhere you would probably be complaining that they are sponging off the state. They should be afforded an opportunity to work if they live here and are part of our community. And maybe by working in supermarkets etc they will be better able to learn to speak English.
What I am saying Micky is that Ireland as a state is broke! We can no longer afford to have these people here. Frsnce, Spain, Germany, and Italy made thse people go back to thir own countries, these are the nations who are currently out of the recession too might I add. There is an overwhelming number of Irish people out of work and they have to watch the foreigners working away , doing whatever they are doing , whether they are driving taxis, working in tesco, or working down the local pub, you have got to admit this is wrong, wrong, wrong! Now I do feel strongly about this, and Micky, if you still need to defend the very presence of these foreigners in this country then you must know yourself, you are in the very , very smallest minority. It;s not that these foreign nationals should be given the oppurtunity for work to boost their living standards or what ever , they simply should not be here anymore, we need to look after our own now, otherwise we fail as both an economy and indeed a nation. In the words of Luke Kelly from his poem ‘For what died the sons of Roisin’ – “HOW MUCH MORE OF THIS COUNTRY DO WE NEED TO SELL BEFORE WE ARE BUT STRANGERS IN IT?” This is what it comes down to Micky.
Why give the lazy thick Paddies jobs, all they ever do is complain about everything. The only thing thick paddy was ever good at is drinking, wife beating and standing in the dole quoes for a free hand out like their backstabbing ould drunken fathers before them. Non nationals should get the jobs and lazy paddy can feck off to England and sing rebel songs and blame everyone he meets for his lazy drunken lost life. Lets send the 10000s of illegal Irish in America back to paddygobackwards also, give them all shovels to pick up the famous dog sh/e thats all over every pot holed street in in that filthy country where people dont seem to know what soap is for . Do ye people ever take a shower? Man ye smell so bad,no wonder then ye cant get a job. BY the way TESCO is a British company they can hire who they like. God save their Queen. So there you are now ye worthless bunch of nobodys, ye know nothing about nothing,, three cheers for the BANKS,F.F LABOR F.G ECT FOR SCREWING THE LOT OF YE HIP HIP HORRAY HA HA HA
I can’t understand why the Irish folks still live this colonial habit. Tesco is an English shop that is found all over the world. The best qualify person should be given a job. 3/4 of the folks in this country do not speak Irish which they should be proud to identify with but often they complained of foreigners who cant speak English. The English themselve do not speak good English. How comes the world have been brain washed by another mans dialec? The wind of change that is blowing around the globe do not seems to be near the Irish sea. This country for the past years have been constructed by foreigners but they never call their good names. The Irish are very lazy and complain alot. How can an employee go for a tea break, smook break and a lunch break? They chat too much even where do not need to. At check out of a supper market, an Irish customer will be take time tell his friend of his plan vacation, number of pints he/she had nite b4. That is unbelievable. Give foreigners chance to change things here. Lot of tallent these guys have. They didn’t come here to receive social welfare. Most of them have homes and people to take care of. Stop being childish. When did English became your language? You hate the English but love their language and to work in their business centres. shame
Tony. You are sprouting nonsense. France, Spain, Germany & Italy did not make anybody go back to their country, as EU citizens people from EU countries are free to travel & work anywhere within the union & I think you showed your lack of knowledge by saying Spain was out of the recession! maybe you should stop judging people by the nationality & judge them by WHO they are … it might help you with your bitterness,
Pablo Ithink you need to rethink your words as we are all EU members now , Yes we can go and work where we want but I speak of non EU members in particular, and while we are on the subject why are jobs advertised in Poland stating ‘no Irish need apply’ are you that folled by Fianna Fail and the EU that you cannot see what is really going on? Furthermore France , Italy and Germany did get rid of all their ‘non EU citizens’ as they cut them off all benifits, thats why most of these people are living under bridges, as they refuse to go home, there was a documentary on the BBC about it only a few weeks back. France then turned around and gave them 6weeks dole and sent them packing.
if you apply for a job,,, be aware,,, your email address will be seen by anyone as the place that is doing the applications are sending BLOCK emails, so USE an email address that is not linked to any social networking site or to your nae,,, just make it an email FOR the tesco application.
i am reading this and actually cant believe what some of you people are saying. first off tony is right in some ways but he doesnt have to be so angry about it and antony if i ever met u so god help you. we are not all laxy drunken people this is just a stereotype the same as all blonds are bimbos. you really sound like an immature child to me. oh and giddy we irish would be proud to be able to speak our own language but if you didnt know when the british invaded and took over ireland the language almost dies out so to say i am proud of the people who do speak it and have taken the time to learn it. so we generally didnt have a choice whether english became our language or not it was forced onto us. and i am all for giving the forgeiners a chance but they dont give us a chance by working for so cheap. oh n yea dey do have der own houses but they did not pay for themselves you obviosly bont know this country very well but when the forgieners came over with no jobs our government decided that they should give them 2000 euro to socialise and set them up where to live and all that stuff. no other country does that i have been to australia to work for a year and before they would even leave me in the country i had to have 6000 in an account and somewhere to live. so if we did this they wouldnt tke this country for a ride. there are 60000 polish in this country and 45000 are claiming social welfare and in waterford alone there are 6500 non nationals claiming benefits so its looks to me that most of them are either working for half nothing or on social welfare. so most of ye havent a clue what ye are talking about and if ireland is so bad and we are lazy people that ye cant stand why dont you leave then. you all say that all us irish do is complain wel it seems to me thats exactly what all of ye are doing now is complaing so basically all ye are doing is contradicting yourselfs. thats all i have to say and i think i made a pretty good point.
Since last 6 years I’m living and working in ireland, originally from poland, we bought house here in waterford, paying taxes and trying to settle in. However since i remember irish employers have been always saying that most of the foreigners are hard workers, alright there are maybe some people that can’t speak fluent english like native irish(see sarcasm), of course there will be a bunch of lazy people also taking social welfare. Lets be honest you can’t blame only foreigners, i have seen so many “travelers” families that never been working before and never will be, i heard so many stories about irish imigrants in usa. Don’t get me wrong i was here when the celtic tiger was getting on power and i couldnt believe that no1 was saving money, every year people were changing cars, taking more and more loans, even to replace lightbulb were looking for electrician. People were spending money without thinking about the future. At this stage no1 was complaining about imigrants from eastern europe, most of irish were happy that shity jobs are taken by foreigners. Right now celtic tiger collapsed, and i see that ireland is going down not because of the recession but because of the attitude of people. Please remember it is very easy to find reason to complain but try to look from diffrent point of view.
