The Waterford Schoolboy League Under-14 Kennedy Cup squad returned home from Limerick disappointed last week after their brave effort to win the competition for the 4th time came to an end at the quarter-final stage.
They opened up their campaign with a narrow victory over West Cork – Shane Dineen scoring the only goal of the game. They drew with the North East Counties in game number two. Luke Brown scored the Waterford goal in the 4th minute.
They improved greatly in their third outing, beating South Tipperary 4-0 with goals from Shane Dineen, Aaron O’Connor, Dessie Hutchinson and Meschac Babatu.
The DDSL (Dublin and District Schoolboy League) were next up in the knock-out stage. The Dubliners went into the competition seeking their 7th crown on the bounce. Meschac Babatu scored a dramatic equaliser in injury time for Waterford after Timilehin Toluwanile Solomen had put the holders into the lead.
The game had to be decided by a penalty shoot-out, and Waterford had the misfortune to lose out in equally dramatic fashion. Both sides scored their five kicks but in the sudden death proved to be cruel on Waterford. Dublin goalkeeper Aaron Rochford saved the first Waterford penalty when it was clear that the netminder had moved off his line before the kick was taken.
