Waterford Institute of Technology has welcomed the contents of the ‘Hunt Report’ – despite its effective refusal to recognise the southeast’s “special” university case.

The National Strategy for Higher Education has been a work-in-progress since February 2009. However, the main recommendations of the high-level review group, chaired by Dr Colin Hunt, were widely leaked before this week’s formal publication by Tánaiste and Education Minister Mary Coughlan.

WIT chairman Redmond O’Donoghue yesterday described the report as “an important roadmap for Irish higher education to 2030”, while the Institute’s President, Prof Kieran Byrne said that the strategy provides a framework for it to “advance in unique and distinctive ways”.
