A multi-million euro grant has been awarded to a team of researchers at Waterford Institute of Technology (WIT) as part of an exciting new research project into social network use.
The €15.8 million EU project aims to develop new ways in which individuals and organisations such as emergency services operate and communicate.
Head of Pervasive Communications Services at WIT Kevin Doolin said the use of the technology had the potential to create many positive results for the way in which emergency services react to disasters.
“The first people on the scene after a natural or man-made disaster are local emergency organisations such as the fire brigade, ambulance or police,” said Mr Doolin.
“Using this technology, we could establish a group to quickly share critical information such as danger spots, photographs, trapped victims and so on.”
