The extraordinary success story of Ballinroad continued in Ozier Park on Thursday last when their young players won their third title within the space of two weeks. With the Under-13 ‘B’ Cup and the U14 ‘B’ Cup already placed in the trophy cabinet, the U12 ‘B’ League crown was duly won here, and this week they will be favourites to add the U13 ‘C’ League trophy to their ever-growing list of honours.
It was clear to see that these two teams could not be separated during the course of the long league campaign because both of them paraded players of real class and as a result a thrilling play-off was the outcome.
Ballinroad defeated Mooncoin 4-0 away from home during the league campaign and almost beyond belief Mooncoin defeated Ballinroad by the same scoreline when they played in the Co Waterford venue. Those facts underline how evenly matched the two outfits were going into this game.
Mooncoin had a massive following on the night and it was terrific to see such a large support also for Ballinraoad. It was a terrible pity that one team had to lose out, because neither side deserved to, and one would want a heart of stone not to feel for the Mooncoin players who shed tears when the full-time whistle was blown.
They had no reason whatsoever to cry because they were magnificent on the night, and they had every reason to hold their heads high following a wonderful match. Ballinroad did play some thrilling football and to their eternal credit all of their players took the time to commiserate with their opponents afterwards.
