Ballyduff Upper 2-15; Fourmilewater 1-11
Fourmilewater will have it all to do if they are to win a place in the knockout stages of this year’s County Senior Hurling Championship after they were beaten by an out of sorts Ballyduff Upper side in Group 2 on Saturday evening last at Cappoquin.
While Fourmile’ face an uphill battle to reach the last eight, they are not to be written off completely as they have a game on hand on the pace-setters in group ‘A’. They play Abbeyside in little over a week and a half’s time and then face a crunch match against De La Salle, who are coached by Michael Ryan, a stalwart in the Fourmilewater colours in the seventies and eighties.
When these two sides clashed in the opening round of last year’s championship an epic tussle was fought out in Lismore where Ballyduff Upper came out on top after twice being well behind.
Those that gathered in the Cornerstone Town on Saturday last no doubt did so in the hope that another classic could ensue and for a while it looked that way, particularly in the opening quarter, at the end of which they were tied level on 0-4 apiece.
However, two goals in the second quarter changed matters. Shane Kearney on 22 minutes got the first of Ballyduff’s goals when he shot low and hard past Conor Ryan to give his side a 1-6 to 0-4 lead.
