Division 2B League champions Bohemians will play Division 2A winners Waterford Crystal in the Infirmary Cup final on Thursday, May 20th following their narrow victory over De La Salle on Sunday morning in Ozier Park.
They did it the hard way against the underdogs because they had to come from behind on two occasions before winning out in what proved to be a sudden death penalty shoot-out.
De La Salle struggled all season but they really came alive in the cup competition and scored here after only 3 minutes. John Barns played a sublime pass through to Brian Staunton and he drilled the ball past John Morgan from 15 yards.
Bohemians fought back and equalised on 15 minutes. Colin Wallace controlled the ball out on the right and when he released Dean Twomey the tall striker did the rest by hammering a shot past Daryl McGrath from deep inside the penalty area.
De La Salle regained their one-goal advantage 3 minutes before the interval. Michael English raced into the penalty area to meet a pass from Shane Power but just as he was about to shoot, English was taken down by Gary Wallace.
John Morrissey took the penalty kick but he struck an upright. However, he had to re-take the spot kick as the referee noticed that a Bohemians player (Colin Wallace) was on the ground in agony after pulling a hamstring. Morrissey made the most of his second chance and gave John Morgan no chance.
