Bohemians won the Fitzgerald Youth Cup final in Ozier Park on Wednesday last in somewhat controversial circumstances. The match did not live up to its billing because both sides appeared to play in a rather cautious manner, and as a result we witnessed very little in the way of free flowing football.
However, there was an extraordinary finish and the extra 20 minutes also created a highly debatable decision which eventually saw the famous nursery club from Ben Wadding Park lift the cup.
As stated, both sets of defenders had little difficulty dealing with the odd attacks that came their way. Bohemians did have an opportunity to score after 5 minutes when Thomas Croke ran into the penalty area to meet a free kick taken by Kevin Barry but his header was easily held by Villa goalkeeper Robert Bresnan.
Bohs pushed forward once again on 16 minutes with Zach Shanahan cutting in from the left and releasing Thomas Croke, but he shot wide from the edge of the area.
Three minutes before the break Jack Gaule made Bohs ’keeper Dylan Power work with a strong effort from 16 yards.
Late equaliser
Bohemians did take up the running early in the second half with Thomas Croke latching onto a through ball from Ryan Foley but his attempt was stopped by Bresnan.
Central defender Billy Ryan advanced after 51 minutes to meet a right wing corner by Ryan Foley but he was unable to keep his header on target. Four minutes later Paul Whyte blasted high over the bar after meeting a cross from Shane Nolan.
