Carrick United 4; Villa 0
Carrick United’s Under-11 ‘B’ side won this final in fine style in Ozier Park four days after the senior members of the club had won the Munster Junior Cup in Cahir Park, so there is no doubt that the future is bright in Coolnamuck.
The Villa had no answer against the fast-moving Carrick outfit. With the winners 3-0 up, the game was more or less over at half-time and although the Villa boys battled bravely in the second period they’d too much to do.
Jack Lyons went close to finding the opening goal after only four minutes when he latched onto a pass from man of the match Sean Martin and after controlling the ball on his right-foot, the striker just dragged his shot from 16 yards inches wide of the far post.
It was Martin that found the breakthrough after 16 minutes when the talented youngster picked up a superb pass from James Whelan and when he cut into the penalty area, the winger fired an unstoppable right-footed shot to the roof of the net.
There was nothing that Villa goalkeeper Evan Barry Reid could do to stop that goal and he was left motionless for Carrick’s second goal less than sixty seconds later when Martin set up James Whelan, whose stunning left-footed shot found the top right-hand corner.
These two goals killed the game as a contest and things got even better for the victors on 25 minutes when Michael Meany whipped in a right-wing corner kick that found the head of the unmarked Sean Martin and he powered a header to the net from close range.
Evan Barry Reid came to his side’s rescue with a decent save on 43 minutes when he denied Sean Martin his hat-trick before the ’keeper made a great save to keep out a close-range shot from Jack Lyons following a Graham Holloway delivery less than five minutes later.
