County and Munster Senior Hurling Champions, De La Salle were dethroned at Fraher Field on Saturday last when they lost to Ballygunner in a dramatic Quarter-Final replay that went to extra time.

Although the play during much of the 80-plus minutes wasn’t great, the game was nip and tuck throughout and had two more periods of extra time been required to determine a winner, there would not have been too many who would have argued.

Playing without the suspended John Mullane, De La Salle opened the scoring after just two minutes when James Quirke pointed a free from 50 metres, but not before referee Pat Casey ordered it to be re-taken after the first effort from the same player went to the left of the upright and wide.

Just two minutes later Paul Flynn levelled matters when he pointed a free, which he’d won himself. Two minutes later the Gunners went in front for the first time, when Gearoid O’Connor riffled over a point from play.

The moment of the game came just seconds later. From Stephen Brenner’s puck out De La Salle attacked the Ballygunner goal through Kevin Moran, once again his side’s best player on the night.
