There is an old saying that goals win games and it was never more evident than in this one on in Fraher Field on Saturday last.

Most people would have expected The Nire to have had too much firepower for Ardmore when they met in the final round of games in the league section of the senior football championship, but it was the 2007 finalists that ran out victors by one point to secure their passage to the quarter-finals.

No-one present will retain any aspect of the game in their memory in the long term, so poor was the standard over the hour, something that could be put down to the fact that The Nire had secured their passage into the last eight and Ardmore were also fairly much assured of a quarter-final spot, although their was a slim mathematical chance that they could have been eliminated.

Alan North opened the scoring in the first minute when he pointed from play. Another four minutes elapsed before John Moore broke forward for his wing-back position to equalise for the champions.
