Although last year’s runners-up Ballinacourty only led by a point at the break, in truth they never looked like losing this game at any point and were full value for their win at Fraher Field on Saturday evening – and indeed one felt they could have won by more if necessary.

The first half was a very drab affair. Gary Hurney, in his first competitive start since an injury while training with the county senior hurlers some months back, was the star of the show, opening the scoring on five minutes with a point. Within seconds Ballinacourty added a goal when Mark Gorman rattled the Brickeys net.

Mark Shalloe and Conor McGrath added points for Brickeys in the 10th and 11th minutes to keep in touch. Mark Gorman pointed for Ballinacourty sixty seconds later minutes to stretch their lead, a score that was to their last of the opening half.

In fact only two other scores were registered in an almost forgettable first 30 minutes, both coming from Mark Shalloe frees.
