The Nire 0-12;   Rathgormack 0-12

Rathgormack failed in a brave bid to stay in the championship when they got an unlikely draw against the Nire in Leamybrien last Friday evening. The Nire were already qualified for the quarter-finals and used the opportunity to rest some of their stars with Thomas and Michael O’Gorman as well as Liam Lawlor sitting this one out.

As expected, Rathgormack came out of the dressing room with fire in their bellies and set about their task with an intensity not seen from them this year. They opened the scoring when Edmond Hogan converted a free and they doubled their lead a few minutes later when marauding midfielder Richie Power broke through for a point. With the Nire attack misfiring, it was left to centre-back Brian Wall to open their account with a well-taken free which was followed by a fisted point from his defensive partner, Liam Walsh.

The Rathgormack duo of Richie and Paul Power were enjoying the better of the midfield battle and the ploy of hitting big full-forward, Jason Murray with long deliveries was reaping dividends. The underdogs opened up a two point lead again when Paul Power and Michael Crotty scored.
