Despite two well-taken goals from John Mullane, De La Salle were not able to overcome the challenge of a determined Lismore side in the last round of games in the league section of this year’s County Senior Hurling Championship, and will now have to play eastern rivals Ballygunner in what should be a mouth-watering quarter-final clash in just over a week’s time.

Lismore got off to a flying start, and in the early stages it looked like as if the Westerners were going to coast to victory; but champions are seldom beaten without a fight and De La Salle did make Lismore battle right to the end.

Maurice Shanahan opened the scoring with point on three minutes and when older brother Dan rattled the net just a minute later their intentions were clear.

The impressive Stephen O’Keeffe added another point before De La Salle registered their first score of the evening – a point from play scored by Dean Twomey. Maurice Shanahan and Kevin Moran then traded points from frees, the latter a magnificent effort from inside his own 65-metre line.
