Two of the top young athletes in Waterford at the moment, Shane Quinn, Ferrybank and Kate Veale, West Waterford, both won titles. In a very competitive junior men’s race Shane was always in the front rank and eventually won very decisively by six seconds. His victory assures him of a place on the Irish Junior team for the European Cross Country Championships next month in Portugal. In second place came Emmet Jennings, Dublin, son of Mary Ryan Jennings, Waterford AC.
Kate, who combines Race Walking and running so successfully, was once again most competitive in winning the under-18 title. Her clubmate young Miceal Power, a model of consistency, had a great run in the under-12 race to take second place and another athlete very much in form at the moment, Laura Behan, KCK had a fine run in the junior event to finish third overall and she too will be on the Irish team for the European Championships.
Other high placings were secured by: Sinead Flynn, West Waterford, 8th u14; Krista Meade, Ferrybank, 8th u12; Sean Curran, West Waterford, 10th u14; Aisling Quinn, Ferrybank, 13th u14, and Gary Cantwell, KCK, 16th under-18.
