Bohemians 3; Waterford Crystal 2
League leaders Waterford Crystal went into this game with an unbeaten record in league football. Their only defeat to date was a cup reverse away to Ferrybank.
Bohemians knew that they had to win this game which was played on Friday night last to stay in touch with Crystal because they were beginning to lose ground in the race for the title. They did just that but they left it very late because the winning goal was scored in injury time.
Crystal had to play the last 34 minutes with ten players due to the fact that one of their top men was sent off and that did not make their task easy against a home outfit who were determined to take all of the points on offer. There was an extraordinary occurrence prior to the game. Both sides had to plan without their goalkeepers, who for some reason or another did not put in an appearance on the night.
Ian McCarthy went in between the sticks for Bohemians while the talented Mount Sion hurler Ian Galgey wore the ‘keeper’s gloves for Crystal.
Quickfire goals
Whether he wanted to play in goal or not, Ian Galgey was certainly given a baptism of fire. He saved superbly from Shane Nolan after five minutes and then again from Ryan Foley shortly afterwards. He showed his class once more on 13 minutes, tipping an effort from Gary O’Shea around a post.
Galgey was however beaten on 19 minutes. Gary O’Shea played the ball out to Ryan Foley who found the roof of the net from the left side of the penalty area. Crystal equalised with their first attack of the game on 26 minutes. Augustine Ademone played a lovely ball through to Kenny Moore and he drilled home from 10 yards. Two minutes before half-time Galgey plucked a hard shot from Gary O’Shea from under his crossbar.
Red card
Andrew Mullally, the match referee had his hands full during the course of the first half as the tackles were flying in and he had to produce a number of yellow cards. He had no option but to display a red card to Roy Power after 56 minutes and that gave Crystal a problem, but somewhat against the run of play they took the lead for the first time when Darren White finished off a cross from the right by Andrew Power on 69 minutes.
Bohemians got back on level terms nine minutes later through central defender Brian Nolan, who powered home a header after meeting a well-taken corner kick from the right by Ryan Foley.
Paul Whyte launched a one-man crusade to win the points for Bohs during the remainder of the contest.
He had a shot taken off the line by Craig Nugent on 84 minutes. He missed an open “sitter” in front of goal on 87 minutes but a minute into time added-on he scored a beauty by curling the ball to the roof of the net from all of 20 yards.
