Passage 2-15; Mount Sion 1-11
For the second time in three years, Passage recorded a victory over Mount Sion in the County Senior Hurling championship. It was expected beforehand that Passage would trouble their illustrious opponents but it wasn’t expected that they would end up such resounding winners of this Group 2 clash.
What must be particularly galling for Mount Sion supporters to take this week is that it was one of their former stars who did so much to undo their championship ambitions on this occasion. Eoin Kelly, once a Mount Sion player but lining out in the Passage colours for the past few seasons, ended with a personal tally of 1-7 which went a long way to ensuring Passage’s victory.
Mount Sion actually started this game quite brightly and led in the early stages with Ken McGrath firing over three early frees and youthful corner-forward Martin F O’Neill also grabbing a point.
Passage were kept in the game during the early stages by two Eoin Kelly points from play and with 10 minutes on the clock they trailed the city side by 0-4 to 0-3.
Mount Sion had looked rather comfortable up to that point but received a major blow in the 12th minute. A long delivery by Noel Connors was fielded by that man Kelly who turned and found the back of the Mount Sion net with ease.
