Rathgormack became the first team in the Eastern division to lift some silverware when they saw off the brave challenge of Gaultier in Kilmacthomas last Tuesday evening. The eventual champions proved the old adage of goals win games as they struck the back of the Gaultier net four times to lay the foundation for a well-deserved victory.
Rathgormack got off to a good start in this game when corner-forward, Gavin Nugent showed Rathgormack’s intentions by scoring a great point inside the first thirty seconds. Things got even better for Rathgormack in the third minute when pacy corner-forward, Stevie Kirwan seized upon a mix-up in the Gaultier defence before dispatching the ball to the back of Karl Byrne’s net.
Four minutes later, things got even better for Mervyn Cummins’ side. A free-in to Rathgormack was not cleared by the Gaultier defence and Peter Foran was on hand to knock in his side’s second goal and leave Gaultier trailing by seven points.
Despite playing with the wind, Gaultier failed to gain any foothold in the game during the opening stages. The early goals certainly took the wind out of their sails and after the opening salvo by Rathgormack, Gaultier were playing catch up for the rest of the game.
