Back in the 1980s, many a Saturday afternoon was whiled away watching ITV’s ‘World of Wrestling’. Anyone who remembers the epic fights involving Big Daddy and Giant Haystacks will recall that each wrestler always enjoyed periods of dominance before eventually someone won out.

This Intermediate final in Walsh Park last Saturday followed a similar pattern, with Roanmore eventually coming with a storming finish to claim victory, thus moving a step closer to rejoining the ‘Big Daddies’ of the senior grade.

Roanmore were forced to re-shuffle their pack before the game had even started with regular full-back Eddie Carew injured. Ger Quinlan dropped back from centre-back while Frank McGrath came in and filled the pivotal defensive position.

Roanmore started with the determination of a side adamant that the title was going to be theirs. After the first quarter, they led by 0-6 to 0-1 and looked very impressive.

With Frank McGrath doing well at centre-back and Ger Quinlan having the shackles on Clonea dangerman Fergal Fogarty, Roanmore were very much in the ascendancy.
