It may have looked home and hosed for Tallow by half-time in this junior football final, but a remarkable second half resurgence from Mount Sion made this a game to remember.
Tallow opened the scoring when former Waterford hurler Paul O’Brien took off on a long solo run to the heart of the Mount Sion defence before bisecting the posts for the game’s opening score.
In the third minute, Tallow raised the first green flag of the day when an attempt at a fisted point by William Henley came back off the post. Pouncing on the rebound, corner-forward John-Paul Grey made no mistake from close range.
Grey’s impressive free-taking was one of the game’s major features and there are players at senior level who could learn a lot from the style of the Tallow corner-forward.
Further points from Grey and Henley put Tallow further ahead before they got their second goal in the 13th minute.
A good move involving Paul O’Brien and Kieran Geary put Donncha Mulcahy clear inside the ‘red zone’ and his left-footed finish gave Martin F O’Neill no chance.
A minute later, Mulcahy was fouled in front of the Mount Sion goal and Grey made mo mistake with the resultant penalty to leave Tallow leading by 3-5 to 0-0 with 14 minutes played.
Mount Sion finally got off the mark when the impressive Ian Galgey scored and in the 19th minute, they scored a goal of their own through Michael Gaffney.
Galgey added on another point before the break to leave the score 3-7 to 1-2 in Tallow’s favour by half-time.
After the break, the game changed was turned on its head as Mount Sion improved significantly.
