Here’s hoping commonsense prevails and Ricky Hatton cuts the string on his yo-yo lifestyle right here.

The Mancucian’s devastating two-round knock-out by pound-for-pound champion, Filipino Manny Pacquiao, in Las Vegas in the early hours of Sunday morning (the fight itself occupied six of Sky Sports’ 480 box-office minutes) proved definitively that ‘The Hitman’ is too easily hit at the highest level.

Hatton has been great value throughout his career, but he’s come up well short on a couple of occasions. As Barry McGuigan says, to quit now is no disgrace, what with Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jnr, who beat Hatton in the same ring 17 months ago, “two of the greatest fighters to have laced gloves.”

Hatton’s bank balance is fat enough to hang his up, lucky that all he lost last weekend was face.
