The Waterford Schoolboys League Under-15 squad went into this final in Graun Park on Friday night last as underdogs. On Good Friday the Cork side had been impressive in defeating Waterford 3-1 in the Munster Final and the Leesiders were thus clear favourites going into this decider.
However, Waterford boss John Furlong forgot to show the script to his charges and they went absolutely goal crazy and simply blew the Cork lads out of the water.
The opening goal was scored in the 4th minute and it set the trend for the remainder of the contest. A long ball from right back Kevin Butler for Robbie Bourke was eventually collected by Cork ’keeper Robbie Noonan and when referee Jimmy McGrath deemed that he had took longer than this allotted six seconds with the ball in his hands, he awarded Waterford an indirect free kick in the Cork box. Conor Coad touched the ball to Jack Doherty and he made no mistake.
Things got even better for Waterford on 13 minutes when a long ball from keeper Whitty saw Danny Ahearn put the Cork defence under pressure and when their defender only half cleared with a header, Kenny McEvoy pounced to fire home from the edge of the area.
The crossbar denied Waterford a third goal less than four minutes later when Conor Coad got on the end of a McEvoy corner, but unfortunately from his point of view the ball came crashing back off the bar.
Cork had their best chance of the opening half on 24 minutes when Stephen Mulryan got on the end of a right-wing corner kick; however, although Kevin Butler blocked the ball on the line, it took a great save from Sean Whitty to keep the ball out.
