Holders Wexford made it into the knock out stage of the Oscar Traynor Cup following a dramatic match in Ozier Park on Sunday. With the sided deadlocked at two goals apiece with 20 minutes remaining it looked as if Waterford’s Paul Quilty was clearly taken down inside the penalty area but the match officials waved play on, and that decision was to prove costly for the home side because Wexford went on to after a nail-biting penalty shoot-out.
Wexford had a great chance to open the scoring after only 3 minutes when Warren Broaders played in Jason Murphy but the Waterford goalkeeper Derek Hearne advanced to save with his legs.
The visitors did take the lead, however, on 14 minutes. Warren Broaders sent over a corner kick from the right.
