A patched-up Waterford United team threw away a valuable lead on Friday night at the RSC against Cork City. The Blues had been fortunate to go in front but they held their advantage for only three minutes, and had to settle for a point which keeps them in second place, four points behind leaders Derry City who were held to a scoreless draw by Limerick at the Brandywell on the same evening.
Regular players Kevin Murray and Willie John Kiely watched from the stand as Paul McCarthy had to leave the field after only 13 minutes and that meant that Waterford manager Stephen Henderson had to switch his team around to try and get some sort of shape.
Paul Carey came on to fill in at right full-back, John Kearney went into the middle of the park to replace McCarthy and Alan Carey went to centre back. By the time the game finished both of those players had picked up knocks and now they are doubtful for Saturday’s away game against Derry. It never rains but it pours – even in the sun!
The first half did have its moments, but in general there was too mush tension in the air.
