Waterford United are out of the top three for the first time this season following a dreadful display against Shelbourne at the RSC on Friday night last. Coupled with Monaghan’s away victory in Derry and Limerick’s home win against Athlone, the Blues are now outside the play-off positions as they prepare to start the last series of games at home to Wexford Youths this Friday.
This was United’s heaviest home league defeat since August 2007 when Cork City won at the RSC by the same score. Despite the fact that three midfield players were missing due to suspension and injury this was a woeful performance, and the home side could count themselves lucky not to have lost by at least three of four more goals.
It is hard to believe that the Blues won their opening six games and were made raging-hot favourites to win the title. On the evidence of this latest result, Stephen Henderson’s team will be lucky to make it back into the top three and secure a play-off place.
