County champions Ballygunner and Lismore will have to meet again on Saturday next at Fraher Field after the westerners’ late rally earned them a second crack off the holders.
Playing with the aid of a stiff breeze Lismore got off to a flying start when Maurice Shanahan hit over a brae of frees inside the opening three minutes to give the westerners an early lead.
Padraig Prendergast added a third point in the 10th minute and it was all one way traffic.
Ballygunner needed scores to ease their way into the game and their first score came on 11 minutes from the hurl of Shane Walsh and was quickly followed by a Stephen Power point from a free.
Maurice Shanahan added two further points by the 17th minute for Lismore to stretch their lead to three but it was wiped out in one quick movement.
Wing backs Philip Mahony and Stephen O’Keeffe linked up with Harley Barnes in the middle of the field who in turn found David O’Sullivan.
With all the space in the world, O’Sullivan ran at the Lismore defence and unfurled a powerful shot which flew past Brendan Landers to level matters at 0-5 to 1-2.
The next score after conceding a goal is always crucial and thankfully for Lismore it came for them when Maurice Shanahan popped over a point from play.
Maurice and Dan linked up to set up Padraig Prendergast and when David Howard pointed with six minutes of the half to go, Lismore were three ahead once more.
