Ballygunner 6-9; Mount Sion 0-7
Holders Ballygunner are through to the county minor hurling final after a comprehensive win over old rivals Mount Sion in Walsh Park last Sunday.
Indeed, from the moment that Pauric Mahony scored a goal from a 21-yard free in the seventh minute, the result of this game was never really in doubt.
It was very obvious from the very beginning of the game who were the danger-men for each side.
Mount Sion withdrew an attacker and stationed him in defence as an extra marker on the ever-dangerous Mahony. Down at the other end, Ballygunner played two defenders in the vicinity of Stephen Roche.
Despite the extra attention, both players were still able to have a huge influence on their teams and it was 18 minutes before anyone else scored.
In the early stages Mount Sion led by 0-2 to 0-1 and after running Ballygunner so close in an earlier round, they held high hopes of victory.
However, after Mahony’s goal from the free, Ballygunner kicked on and after that there was only one team in it.
Mount Sion did manage a brace of points from play by Roche and Evan Sheridan but Ballygunner got their second goal in the 20th minute which re-asserted their authority on the scoreboard.
