Nemo Rangers 1-12; Stradbally 1-5
Stradbally’s dream of winning the Munster club championship died for another year when they suffered a seven-point defeat to competition specialists Nemo Rangers in Pairc Ui Rinn last Sunday. In truth, the scoreboard did not do justice to the efforts put in by Sean Ahearne’s charges as Stradbally had their illustrious opponents on the rack for long periods of this game.
Stradbally needed to get a good start in this game if they wanted to rattle the Cork champions but unfortunately they could hardly have had a worse start. With Nemo already leading by a point following an early score from Cork star Paul Kerrigan, they were awarded a rather dubious penalty when the referee adjudged that David Kearney was fouled in the square. Whether he was or not is now irrelevant, but Kearney picked himself up off the ground before putting his penalty beyond Oliver Costelloe and into the Stradbally net.
