Twenty-three-year-old fashion student, Barbara Hewson from Tramore, is one of the finalists in the prestigious Persil Marks & Spencer Fashion Awards 2009. When Irish fashion designer, Peter O’Brien, and uber chic stylist, Catherine Condell, together with Carmel Breheny, marketing manager for Marks & Spencer Ireland, announced the finalists, Barbara’s name was among the elite eight. Currently in its tenth year, the hotly contested award is the largest fashion design competition in Ireland.  It is a once in a lifetime opportunity for young fashion design students hoping to make their mark in today’s competitive market and with a first prize of €10,000 is a great boost to their budding fashion careers. The final will be televised live on the Late Late Show in April and outfits from all eight finalists will be showcased in selected Marks & Spencer Stores during May.

A final year student at the Limerick School of Art & Design which is part of the University of Limerick, Barbara is daughter of Kevin and Mary Hewson. She was educated at Holy Cross and Stella Maris schools in the town. The family resided at Rose Lawn in the resort until about four years ago when they moved to Fenor.
