11DeeJacquesLABOUR Councillor Deirdre (Dee) Jacques took up her seat on Waterford City Council this week, making her the first woman to hold a seat for the party on the council. Cllr Jacques has also become only the sixth woman ever to serve on Waterford City Council.
She was co-opted onto Waterford City Council following the resignation of Pat Hayes. At Monday’s meeting of the council, Labour Cllr Seamus Ryan proposed Ms Jacques as a replacement for Mr Hayes and this was seconded by Cllr Jack Walsh.
“Dee is well-known to people in Waterford for her community work,” said Cllr Ryan.
“I believe that Dee Jacques will make an excellent councillor and will represent the people of her area with great distinction,” he said. Cllr Ryan spoke of her strong Labour background, her involvement with the activities of her local branch, and her work with the party on national issues.
