WWRDPlanTwenty of Waterford city’s most prominent civic, hospitality, cultural and political figures are combining their wit and considerable wisdom to promote the city as a major tourism destination.
Under the ‘Destination Waterford’ umbrella, a tourism committee, established in January, is committed to promoting, developing and expanding the city’s appeal to domestic and international visitors alike.
The committee represents a cross-section of different ventures based in Waterford city, including City Manager Michael Walsh, Waterford Chamber Chief Executive Michael Garland and RTE’s Damien Tiernan.
The group also notably includes David McCoy of WWRD (UK) Ltd, the company which will operate the new Waterford Crystal Visitor Centre on The Mall, which will officially open in early June.
Speaking to The Munster Express, Chamber CEO Michael Garland sounded an undeniably positive note regarding ‘Destination Waterford’.
“The days of looking outside of Waterford for help, to try and get something off the ground here in this city – they’re largely gone,” he said.
“Whether we have a minister at the cabinet table or not – of course we’d prefer to have one – but there’s an onus on those working and living here in Waterford to do something meaningful to help deliver on the massive potential that this city has.”
Destination Waterford has been subdivided into four subcommittees – namely Marketing, Strategic Development, Festivals & Events and Product Development.
