CasualtyThe HSE’s emergency services in the southeast area confirmed they have been “very busy” during the recent ‘cold snap’, with the increased trends seen nationally dealing with falls and other accidents “very evident” via the A&E department at Waterford Regional Hospital.

According to sources, Ardkeen has reportedly recorded the highest number of injuries from falls in seven years, with a high percentage of accidents resulting in broken bones.

Ice-related incidents caused a surge in the number of people presenting with sprains and fractures as a result of slips on frozen roads and footpaths.

While exact figures for the numbers of people presenting will not be known for some weeks yet, the HSE is reporting an overall increase in cases of around 9%.

John Hennessy, HSE Assistant National Director for Acute Hospitals, praised the “exceptional” response from staff and said many hospitals have increased the number of orthopaedic theatre sessions to deal with the increase in fractures.
