A massive internet auction of the contents of Waterford Crystal’s city and Dungarvan plants has been described as an ‘overall success’.

A spokesperson for Dublin-based auctioneers McKay and Associates, who conducted the auction, said Phase 1 of the sale had concluded successfully. Items for sale included a full-size replica of the famed Millennium globe which is lowered onto Times Square in New York every New Year’s Eve and expressions of interest in the lot had come from as far afield as Syria, India, the US and eastern Europe.
The sale of ‘ancillary and support equipment from a glass manufacturing facility’, authorized by receiver David Carson, also included eight generators, glass machinery, mainly glass cutting and polishing machines, lathes and milling machines, wood saws, 16 pallet trucks and several pallet wrappers, as well as specialised laboratory equipment. Even the main furnace at Kilbarry was on offer.
Phase 2 of the clearance, which will eventually see the entire contents of the all local Crystal factories, stores and sites sold, is set to take place early in the New Year.
