Waterford football captain Gary Hurney is named in the county’s hurling side to play Clare in Sunday’s eagerly awaited championship tie in Limerick. As expected, Ken McGrath, Eoin Murphy and Paul Flynn are missing through injury but Eoin Kelly’s absence is something of a surprise, despite his finger injury from which it was hoped he had sufficiently recovered to take his place.

Having said that, it will be no surprise if the latter lines out, given the fact that Deise hurling teams named in advance of big games over recent years often bear little relation to the formation which takes the field.

The team announced is: C. Hennessy, B. Phelan, K. Moran, A. Kearney, T. Browne, D. Prendergast, J. Kennedy, M. Walsh, D. Bennett, D. Shanahan, G. Hurney, S. Molumphy, J. Mullane, S. Prendergast, E. McGrath.

Those travelling to the match should be aware that the road between Bulmers and Statoil in Clonmel will be closed from 11.00 to 1.00 due to a mini marathon. It is best to turn right at Kilsheelan and head for Fethard, then take the Cashel Road to Golden, Dundrum and Tipperary Town.
