THE 2015 St. Declan’s Community College
School Awards took place on Friday May 22nd.
Guest speaker was reporter with The Munster
Express, and past pupil of the school, Kieran
Foley.
The school enjoyed tremendous success
during the past school year and the fantastic
achievements of students were recognised at the
awards ceremony.
Transition Year students received their TY
certificates and Gaisce medals. An entertaining
DVD showcasing the many activities which
students participated in during the year was also
shown.
Spirit of the Year Awards were awarded to
Ellie May Connors (First Year), Ciara Hutchinson
(Second Year), Jack Mulcahy (Third Year),
Craig Dunphy (Fourth Year), Sinead Kavanagh
(Fifth Year), and Elaine Grogan (Sixth Year).
Certificates of Excellence were presented to
Ross Flaherty (SEC High Achiever in Science
and Maths 2014 JC/First prize in U16 Creative
Writing for Youth Competition for Listowel
Writers Week 2015); Sadhbh Bolger and Kate
Lenihan (Equestrian); Adam O’Brien, Craig
Dunphy and Colm Millea (National Enterprise
Awards); Orla Flynn (Intermediate All Ireland
Camogie); Pippi Griffin, Ryan Houlihan, Anna
Johnson, Gearóid Murphy (Bord Gáis Student
Theatre Awards); Louise Casey and Alice White
(Green Flag on behalf of the Green Schools
Committee); Darryl Walsh (selected on Irish
U15 soccer squad); Calum Lyons (captain of
senior hurling team); Josh Moore (captain of
U19 soccer team).
Certificates of Excellence in Department of
Education Examinations 2014 were awarded to
Seamus Burke (Junior Certificate) and Niamh
Galvin (Leaving Certificate).
The Sean Aherne Award for Excellence in
Science, in honour of former principal the late
Sean Aherne, was presented to Sean’s nephew
Michael Aherne. The award is presented to the
student who achieved the highest points total in
Science subjects in the Leaving Certificate.
The following students were awarded a language
scholarship from the Waterford/Wexford
Education and Training Board (WWETB), in
order to assist them with their studies in each of
the respective languages: Jennifer Walsh (Irish –
Senior), Claire Veale (Irish-Junior), Elaine Donnelly
and Steven Lannon (French), Kirstie Allen
and Niamh Norris (German).
Melissa Brazil will represent St Declan’s in
Lourdes this summer where she will act as a
carer for the disabled. St Declan’s has a long
association with the Waterford & Lismore
Diocesan pilgrimage to Lourdes. Melissa was
presented with an award in recognition of her
selection.
Sports Stars Awards were presented to Emily
Keane (Junior Girls), Darryl Walsh (Junior
Boys), Orla Flynn (Senior Girl), Cormac
Dunphy (Senior Boy).
The Derek Ryan Perpetual Trophy was presented
to Calum Lyons. The award is made each
year in memory of one of the school’s most loyal
and dedicated players, Derek Ryan from Ballyduff,
who died tragically some years ago.
Pins were presented to the following students
who will act as First Year Mentors: Niamh Cahill,
Megan Carroll, Emma Cooper, Craig Dunphy,
Katie Foran, Lauryn Foran, Pippi Griffin, Jeff
Halley, Anna Johnson, Marie Keane, Holly
