Waterford’s Theatre Royal is to undergo a €1.6 million refurbishment which will result in an exchange of seating capacity for greater comfort.
Seat numbers will be reduced from 567 to 420 with the clearing of sight lines and the creation of more leg room. The lobby area is also to be renovated.

Architect Ken Wigham presented the grant-aided plan to the City Council members on Monday night. He said he envisaged work starting next July or August and the job taking ten months to complete.

Cllr. Davy Walsh said the project would considerably enhance the city’s Viking Quarter while Mayor Mary O’Halloran said it would make theatre-going a more enjoyable experience for patrons.
