A number of local bands have come on board to support a fundraising night at the Holy Cross Bar in aid of the local Meals on Wheels service, after a collection box for the charity was allegedly stolen from the pub last week.
CCTV footage of the alleged incident released on social media appears to show a man, dressed in a suit and tie, sit down at the bar beside the box and move his jacket over it. When he is finished his drink, he seems to pick up his jacket and the box and then leave the bar.
It’s not known how much money was in the box but it is regularly collected and replaced by the charity. The local Meals on Wheels service, based at Lady Lane, is a non-profit organisation that delivers hot meals to disabled and elderly people across Waterford on a daily basis, as well as organising bingo and various other social events.
Bar manager Isabelle Bohill said locals were “disgusted” by the events and confirmed that a fundraiser is being planned to compensate Meals on Wheels for the money they have lost.
A man has been arrested in connection with the incident and is due to appear in Waterford District Court on January 26th.
