And so, the evergreen Larry Gogan moves to yet another chapter in his long career as he switches from RTE’s 2fm to RTE Gold.Larry is the original Irish pop DJ and from the halcyon days of the showband era he is one of just a handful of big names remaining.
Of the original first wave, only Brendan Bowyer, Dickie Rock and Johnny McEvoy are still with us and active. Sadly, gone to their eternal rewards are Brendan O’Brien, Joe Dolan, Butch Moore, Larry Cunningham and Big Tom. Also gone are original rock musicians Rory Gallagher, Phil Lynott and Gary Moore. Larry would have played all their records from the very beginning starting with the first showband recording ever, Tom Dunphy’s ‘Katie Daly’. I wish him continued success in his new spot. RTE Gold has been gaining in popularity and Larry’s presence will boost its listenership even more.
The stories about mad answers given to Larry during his infamous Just A Minute Quiz are myriad but my favourite is the one where Larry asked a contestant to complete the phrase ‘Happy as …’. When the contestant hesitated, Larry hinted helpfully, “Think of me.” “Eh,” said the contestant, “happy as a pig in shite.”
